The idea for this blog came to me one evening while I was walking my dogs.
Well, actually, the general idea of creating a blog has popped up in my head on several occasions already over the years. But until recently I’d been telling myself that I didn’t have anything interesting enough to say, or that blogging wasn’t for me, or even that I’d be no good at it. Luckily I now know I was wrong, and I’ve since learned I can’t know if I’ll like something or be any good at it until I try. (But that’s a post for another day 😉)
The idea for this particular blog is actually very recent, and since I’m currently at a time in my life during which I’ve made the compromise with myself to go after what I want – even if it may seem “ridiculous” or scary at first – I decided to just go ahead with the blog and see where it takes me.
Even though I expect and anticipate it to evolve over time, I’m starting this blog with a few specific goals in mind.
Since I have recently begun to take my writing passion seriously, I thought to create this blog as a means to both document my writing journey, as well as something to keep me consistent on the days I don’t feel inspired.
The purpose of documenting my journey is so that, one day, I can look back to older posts and see how far I’ve come. It might even help me remember lessons I’ve learned but struggle to recall at certain moments.
The idea of using this blog to stay consistent comes from something I’ve heard in a podcast: one of the best ways to stay consistent is to create some kind of “social contract”. Something official that keeps you accountable if you don’t follow through. Well, I thought that this blog could be my social contract. A place where I’m expected to be consistent, and I’m expected to give updates on my writing.
A bonus factor is also that, this is the first time I publicly announce that I am writing a novel. So far I’ve always kept that a secret, just in case it didn’t wind up being anything real (🙄), but now, by writing about my writing journey, I am actually admitting to others, and myself, that I am a writer, which is something I believe I have never said before.
Additionally, I often find myself having thoughts and reflections about writing, whether it be something general, or something linked to my personal journey, and I thought that this blog could be a great place to share. And who knows, maybe it might even spur some interesting conversations with you all. If you also have a passion for writing and would ever like to exchange or comment on something I’ve shared, please don’t hesitate to do so by writing a comment so that I can see it and reply to you. I would love it if this blog led to the creation of a supportive writing community!
Okay, well, I think that this is it for my first Reflections post. I hope this gives you a clear idea of what I want this blog to be. I’m really excited for it! 😃
One more thing before I finish for today. I would like to add that it’s important to remember my actual passion and big goal for this year is to finish writing my novel. This means that this blog comes secondary to that, and if I ever feel like it’s overwhelming me or keeping me from working on my actual goal, I will adapt and adjust accordingly. This blog is meant to be a tool to help me on my writing journey, and not something that slows me down. I’d rather my posts sound raw and fulfill their purpose, rather than keep me endlessly occupied and obsessed by refining every word and line endlessly. That said, I will of course do my best to do as good a job as possible and I plan to improve as I continue with it.
Alright, that’s it for today. Thank you for reading, and see you again in the next post!
