I wrote longhand today. I did so because I found myself procrastinating this morning, having serious trouble getting myself started, and as I’ve mentioned in a previous post, sometimes writing longhand can get the writing inspiration to kick in. But in all honesty, I didn’t think I was going to get much done today.
I still pushed myself to do it since I have set this goal for myself of writing for a minimum of one hour every day, no matter how much or well I write, and I didn’t want to disappoint myself by not pulling through.
So I wrote. Once again I began by asking myself the simplest questions, and the one that clicked today was “What does my MC’s first week of apprenticeship look like?”
To answer that question, I began by rewriting a few “base ideas” I had already worked out in previous writing sessions. And then I decided to expand on them. And then I was rewarded by my little trick of writing longhand having worked; the writing eventually clicked and instead of sitting at my desk with a pen in my hand, I was transported into my novel, seeing the characters and landscapes as if I was there with them – which is such an amazing feeling.
Usually when the writing inspiration kicks in, I like to change from longhand writing to writing on my laptop. But today I was so immersed in the novel that I decided to keep going longhand – partly because I was afraid of being pulled out of it if I changed the writing method.
So I kept writing longhand. I wrote and I wrote, and I’m actually really happy with what I have. I don’t know how many words I reached today, but I’m excited to find out after I’ve transcribed everything into my Scrivener manuscript. I almost want to transcribe it now, but my head is honestly tired from the writing sprint I just did, so I prefer to wait and rest a little first.
