Day twenty-nine of the writing streak
I went to the cinema today to watch “The Odyssey”. I rarely go to the cinema, in general my average is once every couple of years. The funny thing is that every time I went in the last six years or so, I always came out of the screening with some kind of new inspiration for my writing. And today was no exception. The strange thing is that I’m no stranger to movies. I watch movies regularly, and yet it’s rare when I feel this intense inspiration for writing from any movie, even though this has happened multiple times during cinema outings. The strangest and funniest thing yet though, is that this sudden inspiration hits me at the beginning of the movie. And I mean really the beginning. Today for example, the inspiration hit me as I was watching the very first scenes, less than 5 minutes into the movie. I swear I’m not exaggerating. And I know it was similar the last time because, even though I can’t remember the exact moment the inspiration hit me, I remember sitting there watching the movie, constantly reminding myself not to forget the idea I had just had, and lamenting not being able to write it down in the dark room, exactly like today.
The reason why I share this today is simply because I find it interesting, and a little funny. I don’t know why this happens. Is it just a coincidence that the same thing happened during my last three cinema outings? Or is it maybe that my brain is somehow more creatively active in certain environments? Or maybe there’s an entirely different explanation that I can’t think of right now?
Whatever the reason is, it happened in the past, and it happened again today.
The good news is that I was able to remember my brilliant idea, and as soon as I was back home and I had finished walking my dogs, I sat down to write. And I was so inspired that I wrote a little over 2.000 words in one sitting (I admit to having forgotten to set my usual 30-minute timer. And since I didn’t look at the clock when starting to write, I have no clue how long I wrote for today).
I think that the idea I had today was genuinely a good one, and I’m glad I was able to remember it through the excitement of the movie. Now I only hope this idea still sounds as good to me in a week as it does right now. I guess we’ll see.
The movie was really great, by the way!
